Within its multi-power source offering strategy, FPT Industrial is working to develop Hydrogen Fuel Cell technology. It represents a Research and Development project that in the future could lead to new zero emissions solutions specially designed for heavy duty transport, both long haulage goods delivery and long-distance / intercity passenger transport.

At the 2018 edition of IAA, in Hannover, the Brand presents an Hydrogen Fuel Cell Concept Powertrain developed by FPT Industrial for IVECO and displayed on the IVECO stand (Hall 17 – Booth A01).

The Hydrogen Fuel Cell is a promising technology with high density capabilities, potentially modular and outstanding environmental credentials (zero Tank To Wheel emissions and Wheel To Wheel depending upon H2 sourcing). The H2 could also become a key element in the development of a Circular Economy, when hydrogen is produced locally through renewable sources, from Biomethane or by wind or solar energy.

The purpose of FPT Industrial’s R&D project is to study, test and overcome actual constraints to make H2 a real ‘Mission Enabler’ in achieving zero emission for all ‘high energy demanding applications’ that demand significant autonomy at high load, delivering apposite performance, autonomy, efficiency and reliability.

From carbon fibre high-resistance tanks, the hydrogen flows into the fuel cells to generate electricity that powers a 400kW electric engine. This combination, of electric and fuel cell, delivers a zero emission vehicle, and it identifies hydrogen as the natural evolution of Natural Gas for long-haul applications requiring zero NOx, zero PM and zero CO2.
