How can we relieve the pressure on London's transport system?

A report has been released from the Commission on the Future of London's Roads and Streets which looks at how the capital could tackle the conflicting pressures on its transport system. Some of the reforms proposed include introducing a cashback scrappage scheme as part of the Ultra-Low Emission Zone, benefiting motorists who pay ULEZ charges frequently, replacing the Congestion Charge with a pan-London, pre-pay smart road user pricing scheme and encouraging households to give up their parking permits through incentives such as Oyster or car club credits.

Following the release of the report Ozgur Tohumcu, CEO of Tantalum, a UK company that provides connected car services to help monitor and reduce emissions, made the following statement: “Tackling air pollution is going to require every part of a city’s infrastructure to be looked at, analysed and made more efficient. The latest report from the Centre of London’s Commission is an important step in finding new ways to manage our roads.

"The report calls on the Mayor to introduce an emissions-based charging scheme by 2020, whereby drivers would pay according to the environmental impact of that particular journey. Tantalum wholeheartedly agrees that this is the fairest and most effective approach and our partnership with Imperial College is delivering the technology that can accurately estimate real-time emissions from individual vehicles in order to support this kind of approach.

"This would empower motorists to minimise the amount they have to pay by adopting a more eco-driving style – which has the added benefits of being safer too. It would also reduce the burden on the taxpayer as the city wouldn’t have to be covered with expensive cameras.

"As the Mayor decides on the future of London’s complex system of charging schemes, we hope he reads this carefully and works to deliver on the Commission’s recommendations.”
