Work formally commenced on the development of the Weightless-N standard in the third quarter of 2014 after a comprehensive review of functional and parametric requirements for IoT connectivity technology in sub-GHz spectrum.
Version 1.0 of the Weightless-N standard will provide uplink connectivity based on Ultra Narrow Band technology, enabling vendors to quickly offer product to the developer market. Future iterations of the standard will incorporate bidirectional communications. Meanwhile, the Standard supports frequency hopping to provide best in class interference tolerance, mobility support with work already underway within the sub group to assess the requirements for multi-country roaming, proven, best in class security regimes incorporating well established shared key security protocols with the Weightless SIG holding the master record of device identities and keys and collocated multiple network support integrated into the specification.
NWave Technologies, an IoT technology vendor and Core Member of the Weightless SIG, is heading up the Weightless-N working group developing the specification. Commenting on progress, Jonathan Wiggin, CEO, NWave, added “The Weightless-N standard is rapidly evolving and we are on target to deliver compliant development kit hardware to IoT engineers in Q2 2015”.
The next Weightless-N working group meeting is scheduled for mid February when details of progress on the specification will be provided on the Weightless SIG website.
Organisations interested in participating in and contributing to the Standards definition process and helping to define the development roadmap for Weightless-N are invited to consider joining the Weightless SIG as Core Members. Organisations can register for membership instantly via the Weightless SIG website.
“Solid development work within the working groups responsible for Weightless-N has progressed the specification significantly since October 2014,” commented Professor William Webb, CEO, Weightless SIG. “We are looking forward to publishing v1.0 of the standard in the second quarter.”
