ChipX Inc. has announced it has joined the CE-ATA Workgroup to expand its product offering with CE-ATA solutions. Consumer electronics and portable product developers are always trying to lower system footprint, improve power efficiency and integrate as much of their designs as possible into the smallest number of devices. Hard disk interfaces have not been designed for these applications and are neither small nor efficient.
The CE-ATA Workgroup initiative defines a standard storage interface for small form factor disk drives for Consumer Electronics (CE) as well as portable devices. Specific advantages of CE-ATA include low pin count, low voltage, power efficiency and integration efficiency. CE-ATA Workgroup promoters include Hitachi, Intel, Marvell, Nokia, Seagate, and Toshiba.

“The ChipX range of Structured ASIC solutions has always included small, efficient products for designers wanting to quickly adopt emerging technologies”, said Wouter Suverkropp, Director of Marketing at ChipX. “The CE-ATA interface allows our customers to include hard disk storage solutions specifically designed for use in portable applications.”

CE-ATA can be implemented on virtually all ChipX products, which offer gate counts ranging from a few thousand gates to 2 million ASIC equivalent gates, and a broad range of memory sizes. It can also be implemented on ChipX’s latest CX6200 family with integrated USB 2.0. ChipX offers an extensive array of packaging options for portable consumer devices, including diminutive wafer scale packaging (“die bumping”), bare die, small footprint TFBGA and QFN packages.
