The Bluetooth SIG hosted its inaugural Bluetooth World conference last week in Shanghai, China. The event brought together a record number of industry elite and Bluetooth product innovators – both current and prospective SIG members – to inspire, empower, and teach one another on the bright future of Bluetooth wireless technology.
The emerging consensus that Bluetooth will be the low power link to the Internet of Things was covered at length, with companies from health and fitness to automotive and consumer electronics sectors showing a vested interest in the growth and proliferation of Bluetooth Smart Ready and Bluetooth Smart.

“The attendance and excitement for Bluetooth World was really amazing to see – with nearly 1000 registered attendees, every presentation, session and exhibition was filled to capacity,” said Mark Powell, executive director of the Bluetooth SIG. “Our welcome in Shanghai was incredible. On Weibo, China’s version of Facebook, our followers grew by 1082 percent throughout the first day of the conference. Bluetooth is booming and the industry and China are clearly taking notice.”

Robert Scoble, renowned technology expert and author, kicked off the conference with a keynote presentation on the rise of “contextual computing”, painting a vivid picture of wearable computers providing people useful information based on the context of their activity. The conference also included “Innovation Presentations” from visionary Bluetooth SIG member companies highlighting the remarkable ways Bluetooth is improving medical care today and will improve driver experiences in the connected automobile of the future. Additionally, industry pundits participated in a lively panel discussion on the critical role of Bluetooth in creating the Internet of Things.

“Bluetooth World 2013 was a perfect mix of educational sessions, innovative presentations and networking with industry players,” said Mario Pasquali, Ellisys president and CEO. “The wealth and breadth of the information delivered at Bluetooth World, in addition to the top-tier audience, makes this a must-attend technology event and sets a gold standard for informative, educational, forward-looking conferences.”

The sold-out Bluetooth World 2013 exhibition hall was packed throughout the conference with exhibitors showing products built better with Bluetooth for health and fitness, medical, automotive, consumer electronics and gaming. Innovative chip and testing solutions were also shown. “Bluetooth technology is expanding into and leading new markets for wireless connectivity well beyond hands-free audio,” said Stuart Carlaw, chief research officer of ABI Research. “Specifically, ABI sees wearable sensors and home automation as key markets for Bluetooth Smart.”
