Avago Technologies Reasserts its Strong IP Position in Optical Finger Navigation

Avago Technologies announced its position in the recent lawsuit filed by Pixart Imaging Inc. Avago pioneered development of optical finger navigation technology and over the past several years has built up a substantial patent portfolio that extends from the integrated circuits for use in optical finger navigation (OFN) to end products, including mobile devices that incorporate OFN. These distinct OFN patents extend from Avago’s proprietary algorithms in processing to intellectual property in modular systems (e.g., lensing systems) to complete systems like mobile handsets.

Avago has not licensed this portfolio to Pixart or other navigation product companies for the purpose of making, using or selling finger navigation products. Customers purchasing Avago finger navigation products are enabled to use such purchased products in accordance with the implied Avago patent licenses that accompany those products.

Pixart Imaging Inc. recently brought suit against Avago Technologies, Inc. in the Northern District of California seeking a declaratory judgment that a license granted to Pixart by Avago for mouse technology should be extended to include Avago’s OFN technology. Notwithstanding the lawsuit, Avago will continue to use all legal means at its disposal to vigorously protect its substantial investment in this technology.
