Typical applications for the TOIM5232 will include wirelessly enabled data loggers and utility meters; IrDA communication in mobile phones, notebook computers, PDAs, and other consumer electronics; and medical applications such as glucose meters and home diagnostic meters.
The TOIM5232 features an operating voltage range of 2.7 to 3. 6V with 5-V tolerant inputs. Maximum current consumption in standby mode is a very low 1μA. A programmable baud clock generator gives designers a choice of 13 baud rates from 1200Hz to 115kHz or an external clock may be used.
In transmit mode, the TOIM5232 shortens RS-232 output signals to IrDA-compatible electrical pulses to drive an infrared transmitter. In receive mode, the TOIM5232 stretches the received infrared pulses to the proper bit width, depending on the operating bit rate. The TOIM5232 is software programmable through the RS-232 port and needs no external wiring for the baud rate setting.
