Introducing Power Integrations’ white paper on converters

Power Integrations (PI) has released a whitepaper that asks whether it is time for DC-DC converter to be replaced by a new power converter architecture.

Entitled ‘The Demise of the DC-DC Converter?’, the whitepaper discusses PI’s InnoSwitch3-MX and InnoMux chipset, and how these products can be used to establish a power architecture that delivers a single-stage converter with multiple outputs – all independently regulated – from a single magnetic component.

Such technology, the whitepaper maintains, eliminates the need for DC-DC post-regulation, and this “dramatically increas[es] system efficiency”.

Among many other facets, the approach (which is already being used in the latest computer monitors) is detailed throughout the document, along with schematics and other diagrams that run through the architecture – particularly in relation to how it addresses the limitations of traditional DC-DC systems.
