Dallas-based Orion Fans has developed a thermally-controlled series of DC fans designed for electric vehicle (EV) battery cooling applications. The smart fans reduce power consumption by up to 30%, as the thermal controller increases or decreases fan speed in response to the air temperature. In addition to providing superior energy savings, the fans’ high airflow help prevents premature electric vehicle battery failures. Orion Fans’ thermal management solutions also can include heat sinks and special voltages when needed.

“When electric vehicle battery compartments overheat, the batteries may not recharge properly, resulting in system malfunctions. The inclusion of smart fans within the compartments combats this problem, keeping a steady, low temperature within the compartment to extend the life of both the battery and the connectors integrated within the EV design,” said David Luna, Orion Fans’ product marketing manager.

The temperature-controlled smart DC axial fans feature a ball-bearing design that extends the life expectancy of the fan while significantly reducing noise levels. Orion Fans temperaturecontrolled
smart DC axial fans are available in a wide variety of dimensions, voltages, and airflows to meet most any application requirement. The OD2510 Series, for example, can provide airflows ranging from 1.8 CFM to 3.2 CFM in a 25mm x 25mm profile, while the OD254 Series provides airflows of up to 850 CFM in a 254mm x 89mm profile. Orion Fans can also deliver custom cooling solutions to meet customer needs.
