NEC Electronics Europe announced the release of the 78K0/Kx2-L Save it! demonstration kit, supporting the recently launched 78K0/Kx2-L microcontroller (MCU) family that offers industry-leading power consumption and high levels of system integration. The new demonstration kit is designed to provide customers with a complete out-of-the-box experience for evaluation of low power consumption MCUs.
The 78K0/Kx2-L Save it! demonstration kit is an extension of NEC Electronics’ high-performance All Flash™ product line targeted for low power applications, which supports on-board debugging and Flash programming. The board, which can be connected to a PC via a USB connection, contains hardware elements such as several push and DIP switches, switches for operation mode setting, 7-segment LED as well as a phototransistor which acts as a luminance sensor, all there to easily demonstrate simple I/O functions or peripheral operation. In addition, the board has a connection facility to external user hardware for custom tests. It also provides a user-friendly power consumption and frequency demonstration GUI that allows the user to monitor the current internal oscillator frequency and the operating current, as well as to check the luminance of the environment thanks to the on-board phototransistor.

The 78K0/Kx2-L Save it! Demonstration kit is built on the ultra low power 48-pin 78K0/KC2-L 8-bit with 32 kilobytes (KB) of Flash and 1 KB of RAM, which offers fully-implemented on-chip peripherals. One of its main features is a highly accurate internal oscillator circuit with selectable clock speed of 4 megahertz (MHz) or 8 MHz at better than +/-2% accuracy whilst completely removing the need for an external clock circuit (up to 10 MHz external clock operation). It also includes innovative new analog circuitry which has been implemented on-chip, including accurate and high-speed A/D converters that work across the entire supply voltage range, and on-chip operational amplifiers, working either as single amplifiers that can be externally connected (using positive and negative input pins) or as programmable gain amplifiers with a gain up to x32, making the 78K0/Kx2-L an ideal selection for sensor applications. 78K0/Kx2-L consumes just 220 microampere (uA) at 1 MHz operation, 0.58 uA in Stop mode with the Watchdog running on the internal 30 kilohertz (KHz) oscillator, or just 0.15 uA for the RTC.

For power-critical applications, further enhancements to increase battery lifetime include flash programming down to 2.0V and a 1.8V to 5.5V supply voltage, across the entire family without restriction. It also integrates fully flexible 16-bit timer and serial interface array units as well as standard peripherals such as a Real Time Clock, windowed Watchdog timer and other safety

functions, including Low-Voltage-Indicator and Power-On-Clear, completing 78K0/Kx2-L’s highly

integrated peripheral set. Embedded flash memory sizes start from just 4 KB, with variants all the way up to 128 KB available across the 78K0 family, providing a flexible and seamless upgrade path to more functionality if required.

The flexibility of the 78K0/Kx2-L Save it! demonstration kit combined with a number of demonstration projects included in the kit enables developers to rapidly evaluate the 78K0/Kx2-L MCU and the board from different aspects and experiment with its peripherals.
