Today Lanner Electronics released the FW-8760, a new mid range network application built with support for the new 32nm Intel Core i3, i5 or i7 processors. The FW-8760 utilizes the Intel 3450 Chipset, has 8 Ethernet ports, can hold 16 GB of RAM and has expansion opportunities via mini PCI and PCIe slots. It is ideal for network security applications, IPS, UTM, Firewall and WAN Acceleration.
According to Jesse Chiang, Lanner Electronic’s product planner, “the FW-8760 has the perfect balance of computing power, flexibility and network throughput.” By flexibility, Jesse is referring to the additional mini-PCI and a PCIe (x)8 lane already built into the motherboard. For extended options customers have the added ability to order more PCIe slots- either 2 more PCIe (x)4 slots or 1 PCIe (x)8 slot.

As a network appliance, the FW-8760 has 8 onboard RJ45 Ethernet ports from an Intel 82574L - with all 4 pairs supporting a by-pass function. The FW-8760 includes space for an additional network card that adds another 8 Ethernet ports for a maximum total of 16 ports. Clients can choose from over ten different Lanner network modules, including 10GbE cards, Fiber bypass and 10GbE Fiber bypass. For additional I/O connectivity, there is a Console RJ45 port, 2 USB 2.0 ports and an optional IPMII via OPMA slot.

The FW-8760 is built around the Intel 3450 chipset and can support the new Intel Core i3, i5 or i7 processors or LGA 1156 processors. It is also the first Lanner networking appliance that uses the Platform Controller Hub instead of a North and South bridge. Utilizing this new ‘Nehalem’ core technology, means this platform comes with an integrated memory controller meaning the 4 x DDR3 RAM slots are directly connected to the processor.

The FW-8760 supports one 3.5 inch or 2 x 2.5 inch hard drives, connected via Serial ATA. There is also a single Compact Flash (Type II) interface. The unit cools itself with a single passive CPU heatsink, 2 regular cooling fans and 1 smart fan. The smart fan has the ability to turn itself on when the machine reaches a certain temperature. The FW-8760 can support Windows, Linux, OpenBSD and Free BSD operating systems. As with other Lanner 1U network appliances there is a front LCD module with the capacity for 2 rows of 20 characters, a watchdog and an internal real time clock.
