Narrowband instrument minimises isotropy error

Attention towards electromagnetic pollution has grown exponentially in the last decade. According to studies and relative guidelines released by the ICNIRP (International Commission on Non-Ionising Radiation Protection), the EU implemented the directive 2013/35/EU on 1st July 2016. The directive sets safety and health requirements about the exposition of workers and general public to electromagnetic radiations.

The Italian-based company MPB released a range of products in order to meet these European standards: the SEP, a new selective electric isotropic 3-axis system, is its spearhead. The SEP is a narrowband instrument that selectively measures the electric field in a frequency range from 100kHz to 3.6GHz, and is aimed at broadcasting telecommunication, mobile communication systems and industrial sites uses.

It is an all-in-one instrument so the spectrum analyser and the 3-axis antenna are both inside the same sphere: this facilitates the operator’s work on the field and the calibration (since there is only one instrument to calibrate and not three). The three-dipole antennas are directly connected to the receiver, which minimises the isotropy error.

The SEP can be plugged to the PC via a fibre optic cable and its software allows several functionalities such as channel power, multi-channel power, settable markers, max hold, RMS and average in a selectable time.

In addition, thanks to its lightweight nature – it weighs 370g – measurements mounted on a drone are allowed.
