UV curable adhesive has a refractive index of 1.51

A one part UV curable adhesive, sealant, coating and potting compound, suitable for bonding dissimilar substrates, has been released by Master Bond. The UV15X-2 combines a high performance physical profile with low shrinkage. The adhesive is particularly suitable for fibre-optic, optical, electronic, microelectronic, semiconductor and laser applications.

Enabling bonding with a wide variety of substrates including glass, metals, ceramics and plastics such as polycarbonates and acrylics, the coating has a tensile strength of 6,000-7,000psi. The UV15X-2, which is suitable for light transmission, has a refractive index of 1.51. The adhesive is not oxygen inhibited and cures readily in 10-30 seconds when exposed to a UV light source. This rate depends on the coating’s distance from the light source, the thickness of the section and the intensity of the light source. The adhesive can be readily cured in sections up to 6.35mm thick, and does not release solvents or vapours.

Allowing rigorous thermal cycling, the UV15X-2 can be used across a temperature range of -62 to +148°C. The coating, which is resistant to chemicals such as water, oils, fuels, acids and bases, provides reliable electrical insulation values, dimensional stability and abrasion resistance. The adhesive is available in a variety of standard packaging options, including syringe applicators.
