Winbond’s CUBE has been shortlisted for the Electronics Excellence Awards under the Software category.
CUBE (Customised Ultra-Bandwidth Elements) is Winbond’s patented high-bandwidth memory interface technology developed to support AI workloads on IoT and Edge computing platforms where power, thermal headroom, and physical space are tightly constrained. The technology is designed to remove memory bandwidth as a limiting factor in Edge AI systems while remaining practical to integrate for module makers and System-on-Chip (SoC) designers.
AI inference at the Edge places sustained demands on memory subsystems, particularly when running Generative AI models and other workloads with large parameter counts. Applications such as computer vision, speech recognition, natural language processing, reinforcement learning, and recommendation systems require high and predictable data throughput to maintain real-time performance. Conventional memory ICs and module architectures struggle to scale bandwidth efficiently without increasing power consumption, board area, or thermal complexity.
CUBE addresses this challenge through a high-bandwidth memory interface combined with a 3D stacked architecture. The technology supports memory densities ranging from 256Mb to 8Gb per die and scales through 3D stacking using Through-Silicon Via (TSV) technology. This approach enables short interconnect paths, high signal integrity, and efficient data movement between memory and logic. The I/O interface supports data rates of up to 2Gbps with as many as 1,000 I/O pins, delivering aggregate bandwidth from 16 to 256GB/s per die. This bandwidth level allows large AI models to be processed locally, reducing dependence on external memory or Cloud-based acceleration.
