An EdTech company has been presented with the King’s Award for Enterprise in recognition of its innovation.
LearnSci, which was created to improve scientific study through simulation and interaction, was given the award by His Majesty’s Lord-Lieutenant, Peaches Golding. The founding members dedicated their win to their team and the late sales consultant, Stan Mitchell.
Director John Eastman said: “We are delighted to receive this award. We could not have done it without the support of all our team, including those who are no longer with us.”
Managing director Bill Heslop added: “Stan believed in the company and team from day one and persuaded us to apply for the award, for which we are extremely grateful.”
LearnSci was set up by scientists John and Bill, along with engineer Tony Baldwin, in 2007. Today, the team supports hundreds of universities worldwide and has 30 specialists on their team. Their products help free up academics’ time, keep costs down, and improve students’ grades.
Innovation
LearnSci was one of just 47 organisations nationally to receive the award, which recognises outstanding business achievements. The digital solutions bring laboratory-based teaching to life, making it more accessible and inclusive worldwide.
Bill, who studied environmental chemistry and marine science, said: “This is an amazing achievement for everyone at LearnSci, as well as our global community of science educators.
“Together with our partner universities, we are helping to promote a modern, inclusive, and personalised approach to learning.”
Challenges
LearnSci and the team of academics it supports have faced challenges over the years, including during COVID and adapting to emerging technology. The pandemic led to a shift to online learning, with a need for additional resources and technical support.
Director Tony, who studied audio and video engineering, created and built interactive online skills training using the latest technology.
He said: “It has been a challenge in the education sector to move from a traditional approach to learning, which has been in place for hundreds of years.
“We helped our partners to adapt to new technology during a time of change and uncertainty. The move enhances student engagement and success.”
Mrs Golding OBE said: “The King’s Awards for Enterprise in the category of Innovation recognise companies that achieve the highest standards demanded by King Charles III. Only a handful of businesses each year achieve this distinction.”
