As of 1st January 2026, all drone users will now need to take an online theory test to receive a Flyer ID before taking to the skies.

This requirement is necessary only for drones that weigh over 100g, having been lowered since the previous requirement of 250g.

Now, those that wish to fly some of the most popular drones will need to visit the Civil Aviation Authority website and pass the free Flyer ID test.

The aim is the make drone regulations easier to understand as well as pave the way for the expansion of drones in the UK. The CAA estimates these new rules could impact up to 500,000 drone users.

New drone users must also register with the CAA for an Operator ID. For those under 18 or under 13, specific rules apply with parents also needing to apply to an Operator ID. Children under 12 must be accompanied by someone aged 16 or over and children under 13 must have a parent or guardian with them when taking the online test.

Jonathan Nicholson, a spokesperson at the UK Civil Aviation Authority said: “Drones are often given as a common Christmas present and with the new drone rules coming into force this week, all drone users must register, get a Flyer ID and follow the regulations.

“We want people to enjoy their drones but it’s vital that they have checked the new rules and know how and where to operate their drone safely before they fly.”
