Place a transparent target between the laser and reference target PSD in the beam’s path then not only can the lateral X-Y positions of each PSD be measured, the angle between the laser beam axis and the axis of the two PSD tooling spheres can be determined.
The solution is On-Trak’s OT-7000 system, an auto-centering, wireless, multi-target alignment tool. Using RF wireless signal communications to the RF Controller, X-Y data can be used to measure displacement and angular deviations in real time.
To reduce the effect of ambient light the laser source is modulated at 500Hz so that the PSDs only lock on to that source.
The resolution limit of the PSD is 2.5µm and provided external vibration, temperature and light are controlled, system measurements of <0.1mm is achievable. Using standard USB or RS232 communication, positional information can be stored into a datalogger, allowing structures, buildings and equipment to be continuously monitored for distortion and flexing.
