Low-power 8-bit micro can drive LCDs with up to 2560 pixels

Toshiba Electronics Europe has announced a new 8-bit microcontroller that combines high performance operation with a variety of integrated peripherals and the ability to drive 80 segment LCD displays with up to 2560 pixels. The new TMP89FS28LFG delivers performance comparable to many 16-bit alternatives while reducing the component count of embedded industrial and appliance designs requiring display interfaces.

Based on Toshiba’s TLCS-870/C1 core, the new MCU is capable of processing one instruction per clock cycle, which helps to maximize performance and keep power consumption to a minimum. Minimum instruction execution times are just 166ns at the maximum clock speed of 6MHz and 122µs at the low power consumption clock rate of 32.768kHz. On-board memory comprises 60Kbytes of Flash, 3Kbytes RAM and 4Kbytes Boot ROM.

The new microcontroller’s integrated 1/5 bias LCD driver is capable of driving 80 segment/16 common and 80 segment/32 common LCD displays. An internal voltage booster ensures stable display contrasts.

Toshiba has integrated a number of functions designed to minimise the need for external components in industrial and appliance designs. A 10-bit successive approximation type ADC is available to process front panel and other analogue inputs, while on-board timer/counters include two channel 16-bit and four channel 8-bit options. A power on reset circuit, watchdog timer and time base timer are also incorporated within the device.

The TMP89FS28LFG can handle up to 26 interrupt sources and offers a variety of connectivity options including SIO, UART, I2C and SEI interfaces. Supply voltages are 3.2V to 3.6V for 6MHz operation; 2.7V to 3.6V for 4.2MHz operation; and 2.2V to 3.6V for operation at 2MHz. An in-built low frequency (32.768kHz) clock oscillator supports a variety of low power modes including STOP, SLOW, IDLE and SLEEP. IDLE and SLEEP modes shut down the CPU and operate the peripherals using either the high- or low-frequency clock depending on application requirements

The TMP89FS28LFG is supplied in a 176-pin LQFP package measuring 20mm x 20mm.
