SMD schottky barrier rectifiers save space
Vishay Intertechnology has introduced six surface-mount Schottky barrier rectifiers in the low-profile DO-219AB (SMF) package. Providing space-saving alternatives to SMA and SOD123W packages, the Vishay Semiconductors SS1FL3, SS2FL3, SS1FL4, SS2FL4, SS1FH10 and SS2FH10 provide reverse voltages of 30, 40 and 100 V and offer high current ratings up to 2A for automotive and commercial applications and industrial applications such as freewheeling dio...
Robust ±60V RS485 transceivers fortify PROFIBUS-DP networks
Linear Technology Corporation introduces the LTC2876 and LTC2877, exceptionally rugged, high voltage tolerant RS485 transceivers targeted for PROFIBUS-DP (decentralised periphery) master and slave devices. As with any fieldbus, PROFIBUS-DP systems are prone to installation cross-wiring faults, ground voltage faults, or surge, which can cause catastrophic overvoltage conditions that exceed the absolute maximum ratings of typical transceivers.
4A synchronous step-down regulator for inverting outputs
The LTC7149 is a high efficiency, 60V, 4A synchronous buck regulator for negative output voltage supplies. It incorporates a current mode architecture with user selectable internal or external loop compensation and an output voltage that is programmed with a single external resistor.
Magnetic field improves conductivity in non-magnetic metal
An international team of physicists has discovered that applying a magnetic field to a non-magnetic metal made it conduct 70% more electricity, even though basic physics principles would have predicted the opposite. "We never expected that magnetoresistance could be lowered even further in the compound we tested, because in theory it should have increased," says Kyoto University study author Shingo Yonezawa.

Conduction cooled AC/DC supplies are rated for up to 1000W
TDK has announced the CPFE1000FI series of conduction cooled AC/DC power supplies. Rated at up to 1000W output power, the units are available in three compact package types – a low profile U-channel with or without a cover and as an open-frame PCB assembly. Requiring no external airflow, the power supplies are designed to be used with a cold-plate, in sealed enclosures or systems that are liquid cooled.
External 165W power supplies fulfil medical standards
TDK Corporation has announced the DTM165 series of medically certified 165W external power supplies. Rigorously tested to the 3rd edition of IEC 60601-1, the products have 4,000VAC isolation from input to output and earth leakage currents of less than 300µA.The series is intended to power a range of hospital, dental and healthcare products for monitoring, imaging and diagnostic applications.
Keeping power factor high at light loads
Techniques for increasing power factor at light loads - from desktop PCs to servers - are explained by Edward Ong, product marketing manager, Power Integrations
Packaging improves thermal performance
The SOT-223 package allows for a 10% cost reduction, in comparison to DPAK, writes Rene Mente, Infineon Technologies. The SOT-223 is a direct pin-to-pin replacement for DPAK designs with slightly reduced thermal behaviour in comparison to DPAK.
Understanding energy storage in Li-ion batteries
Materials researchers at Uppsala University have made new discoveries in understanding energy storage in lithium-ion (Li-ion) batteries. This will help in the design of new materials for future batteries with significantly higher storage capacity than up to now. Working with researchers from the Universities of Oxford and Kent in England and from the USA, researchers from Uppsala University are looking into special kinds of Li-ion battery materia...
