Buck converter reduces system noise & saves space
Texas Instruments has announced a 2.2MHz, dual-channel synchronous buck converter which reduces EMI and high-frequency noise in high-voltage DC/DC step-down applications such as automotive infotainment and high-end cluster power-supply systems. The LM5140-Q1 includes dual outputs with phase interleaving and is offered in wettable flank packaging that enables post-solder visual inspection to speed manufacturing.
100V MOSFET reduces voltage ringing and EMI
Delivering improvements in efficiency, reduced voltage ringing and lower EMI are promised for power supplies, motor drives and other applications requiring a 100V MOSFET. Fairchild has added the FDMS86181, 100V, shielded n-channel MOSFET to its PowerTrench range.
Digital PoL regulators enable FPGA development platform
Infineon Technologies has announced that its digital PoL DC/DC regulators with full PMBus capabilities are featured in the Kintex UltraScale development board. A key driver for the design flexibility of the board is the superior PMBus connectivity of the company's IR3806x family. Configurations can be stored in internal memory and PMBus commands allow run-time control, fault status and telemetry.
Storing energy from floating wind farm in batteries
Norwegian oil group Statoil said it would store energy from a Scottish floating wind farm on a powerful battery storage system, in a pioneering pilot project. The system's one megawatt-hour Lithium battery capacity corresponds to that of "more than two million iPhones," Statoil said in a statement, making it one of the world's most ambitious projects in the field.
Laser method creates micro energy units
In the race to design smaller handheld devices and smartphones, a key factor is decreasing the sizes of components. As the demand for thinner and lighter microelectronic devices increases, manufacturers often are limited by how oddly shaped the energy sources must become to make them conform to the smaller space. Now, researchers at the University of Missouri, have developed a method of transferring an energy source to virtually any shape.
Agreement to provide power supplies for the APG-83 SABR
Milpower Source signed a long term agreement with Northrop Grumman to provide power supplies for the APG-83 Scalable Agile Beam Radar (SABR). Milpower Source implemented innovative technology providing low noise, low weight and high efficiency power supplies for the program.
Energy input predicts molecular behaviour
The world within a cell is a chaotic space, where the quantity and movement of molecules and proteins are in constant flux. Trying to predict how widely a protein or process may fluctuate is essential to knowing how well a cell is performing. But such predictions are hard to pin down in a cell's open system, where everything can look hopelessly random. Now physicists at MIT have proved that at least one factor can set a limit, or bound, on a give...
Lithium-metal batteries become safer with graphene
Recently, researchers at Tsinghua University, China have proposed a graphene-based nanostructured lithium metal anode for lithium metal batteries to inhibit dendrite growth and improve electrochemistry performance. They report their findings in Advanced Materials. "Widely used lithium-ion batteries cannot satisfy the increasing requirement of energy storage systems in portable electronics and electric vehicles. New lithium metal anode b...
Diode-OR controller for high power telecom
A rugged diode-OR controller for dual feed high power telecom and datacom boards has been introduced by Linear Technology. The LTC4371 provides seamless hand-off between redundant power supplies, replacing power Schottky diodes and associated heat sinks with N-channel MOSFETs, significantly reducing power loss, voltage drop and solution size.
Aiming to outperform conventional switching diodes
The Electronica China exhibition, held on 15th-17th March 15-17 in Shanghai, saw Littelfuse add a series of silicon Schottky devices designed for ultra-low forward voltage drop (VF) to its expanding power semiconductor portfolio.
