Method for batteries use organic electrode materials
With people wanting to use smaller electronic devices, smaller energy storage systems are needed. Researchers of Aalto University in Finland have demonstrated the fabrication of electrochemically active organic lithium electrode thin films, which help make microbatteries more efficient than before. Researchers used a combined atomic/molecular layer deposition (ALD/MLD) technique, to prepare lithium terephthalate, a recently found anode material f...
Changes in healthcare needs impact on power designs
Dave Wellman, Sales Manager, Gresham Power Electronics, explains how foundational technologies such as power supplies, which are a vital component in all medical electronics, can be overlooked in a fast moving industry sector.
Sine-waving the route to lower HV-IPD power losses
Consumers have become used to improved energy efficiency and performance of appliances built with variable-speed drives. Georges Tchouangue, Toshiba Electronics Europe believes further demands can be met using sinusoidal current control
Determining DC/DC converter requirements for gate drive applications
How to design ‘well-behaved’ high side gate drive circuits, by Paul Lee, Murata Power Solutions. The MGJ series, for example, has options for +15 or +20V. IGBTs and GaN MOSFETS will be fully ‘on’ with 15V drive but typical SiC MOSFETS may need closer to 20V for full enhancement.
Feeding our insatiable appetite for batteries
The vast array of consumer devices that we use today all need rechargeable batteries. A key element of these batteries is so-called ‘white petroleum’ or lithium – an essentially irreplaceable component of laptops, mobile phones, electric cars and some pharmaceutical applications – which is rocketing in value. Specialists estimate that lithium demand will outstrip supply by 2023, with the vast majority coming from rechargea...
DC/DC converters offer wide choice of output voltages
The latest REC20 and REC30 regulated DC/DC converters with six-sided shielding from RECOM are now available from distributor Dengrove Electronic Components. They provide superior protection for noise-sensitive circuitry. These 20W and 30W isolated converters target high-power industrial applications, with nominal input voltages of 12V, 24V or 48V making them suitable for industrial automation, telecom equipment, and general distributed power arch...
A guide to safely transporting Lithium-ion batteries
UK battery specialist Accutronics has released a new one-page guide about the safe transport of lithium-ion batteries. Targeted at original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) in the medical, defence and instrumentation sectors, the guide offers five quick steps to ensuring that batteries meet international standards of design, assembly and testing before being packed for shipment. The guide can be downloaded here.
Switcher ICs target industrial & three-phase power supplies
Power Integrations has expanded its InnoSwitch-EP family of off-line CV/CC flyback switcher ICs with the introduction of a 900V device. The 900V InnoSwitch-EP IC targets power supplies operating from high-voltage DC and three-phase power sources found in industrial, motor-drive, metering and renewable energy applications, as well as standard mains-voltage applications where continuous operation is required during line swells and surges.
Transmitter coil saves space in Qi wireless charging pads
Suitable for use in WPC-compatible Tx circuits operating with 19V input for up to 10W wireless charging applications, Vishay Intertechnology has introduced an AEC-Q200-qualified, powdered-iron-based, WPC-compliant wireless charging A10 type transmitter coil.
800 & 900V MOSFETs suit high-speed switching below 5A
Suited for switching voltage regulator designs, a range of ultra-efficient, high-speed, high-voltage MOSFETs has been unveiled by Toshiba Electronics Europe. Available with 800 and 900V ratings, the four N-channel devices have typical on resistance ratings down to just 1.9Ω. Target applications include flyback converters in LED lighting, supplementary power supplies and other circuits requiring current switching below 5A.
