Optimising automotive pre-boost power supplies - part 3
Part one of this article described the problem, showed the impact of a cold start test pulse on an automotive power supply and discussed a typical pre-booster specification. The second part provided guidance on proper part selection of all relevant components. This third and final part demonstrates the differences between operation modes and the influence of the inductance and capacitance on performance. By Matthias Ulmann, Texas Instru...
µModule regulator operates up to 150°C junction temperature
The LTM8003, a step-down DC/DC µModule regulator with a 40V input voltage rating (42V absolute maximum) and 3.5A of continuous (6A peak) output current has been introduced by Linear Technology. The LTM8003’s pinout is FMEA (failure mode effects analysis) compliant, so the output voltage stays at or below the regulation voltage in the event of short-circuit to GND, short-circuit to a neighbouring pin or if a pin is left floating.
Power supplies operate in high ambient temperatures
The introduction of the KWS-A series of single output 5W to 25W encapsulated power supplies capable of operating in ambient temperatures of up to 85°C has been announced by TDK Corporation. With a Class II input, the products require no earth ground connection, making them suitable for use in a range of process control, broadcast, test & measurement and industrial equipment.
Non-isolated DC/DC modules offers 95.5% efficiency
Artesyn Embedded Technologies has announced the LGA80D DC/DC module, which offers one of the highest current density ratings in the industry and typical efficiency of 95.5%. With a footprint of just 25.4x12.5mm (1x0.5"), this innovative non-isolated unit offers two independent and configurable 40A, 100W outputs, which can also be combined to a single configurable 80A, 200W output.
How to manage batteries for EVs, PHEVs and HEVs
Multi-cell balancing (MCB) IC features play a key role in meeting performance requirements of battery systems in electric vehicles (EVs), plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs), and hybrid electric vehicles (HEVs), observes Gary MacDonald, Intersil
Space-sensitive design with negative input, negative output buck converters
An engineer designing a PCB, using voltage rails from elsewhere in the system has to convert the power available from those rails to the desired voltages with good efficiency, says Dr. Dan Tooth, Texas Instruments
10W AC/DC power supplies integrate USB connectors
CUI has announced a line of DoE Level VI and CoC Tier 2 compliant wall plug-in AC/DC power supplies featuring an integrated USB connector. The 10W SMI10-USB, SWI10-N-USB and SWI10-E-USB are designed to meet the stringent average efficiency and no load power requirements mandated by the US DoE in effect since February 2016.
Bus converter suits datacomms and server & storage systems
Ericsson Power Modules has announced the BMR458, a 3rd gen 3E quarter-brick advanced bus converter that delivers industry-leading performance to system architects developing equipment for ICT applications, including datacomms and server and storage systems.
Compact DC/DC converters save board space
Two new extremely compact isolated DC/DC converters from Dengrove Electronic Components deliver up to 10W from a 1x1-inch footprint, enabling the drive to save board space in equipment such as distributed power architectures, industrial controls and telecommunication equipment.
Synchronous rectification ICs simplify SMPS applications
Expanding the company's product offering for SMPS applications, Infineon announces the IR1161L and IR11688S Secondary Synchronous Rectification (SSR) controller ICs.
