Relay design evolves to address new applications
Electromechanical relays are continually evolving and adapting to meet the requirements of new generations of applications. For example, longer endurance power relays are needed to address smart meter applications and devices that can withstand higher inrush current are required for inductive load applications like energy efficient lighting.
Cylindrical supercapacitors have excellent power handling
AVX has released a new series of cylindrical, electrochemical, double-layer supercapacitors. Rated for 2.7V and delivering high capacitance values (1F – 3,000F), low ESR (0.16mΩ – 200mΩ at 1,000KHz), low leakage (6µA – 5,800µA), high energy density (1.2 to 5.6Wh/kg), and long lifetime performance (50,000+ cycles).
Multiphase PWM controllers with AVSBus
Intersil announced 12 digital multiphase controllers and a companion smart power stage, including the industry’s first digital solution with an Adaptive Voltage Scaling Bus (AVSBus). The new digital controllers provide up to seven phases assignable in any combination across two outputs, and combine with smart power stages to provide a scalable solution from 10A to 450A. The result is enhanced power optimisation and more energy-efficient net...
Minimising power domain leakage and design margins
Low-power SoCs rely on two design techniques, namely multiple operating frequencies and supply voltages to minimise dynamic power and coarse grain power gating by shutting down parts in sleep mode to save a large amount of leakage power (e.g. up to 99% saving). The implementation of such design techniques requires the insertion of specific cells (power switch cells, isolation cells, level shifters…) at the appropriate places and in th...
Programmable power supplies enable capacitor charging
A series of compact 10W capacitor charging power supplies has been launched by Power Conversion Technology. The CCD10 capacitor chargers are compact high reliability power supplies intended for use as a component part in various applications such as lamp pumped lasers, UV curing and sterilisation, intense pulsed light systems and medical lasers.
Fully encapsulated DC/DC converter modules
The TMDC series is a range of fully encapsulated low profile DC/DC-converter modules just made available by Powersolve. The modules feature ultra-wide input voltage ranges of 9 to 36VDC and 18 to 75VDC and are available with fixed 5.1, 12, 24 and 48 VDC output voltages in 20, 40 or 60W ranges.
Current power supplies charge energy storage systems
The five-year warranty EVS series of constant current power supplies has been introduced by TDK Corporation. Two power levels are offered - a fan cooled 600W and a convection cooled 300W. These compact power supplies are suitable for water purification systems or to charge batteries for energy storage.
Fundamentals of power integrity measurement – part two
In part two of his article on power integrity measurement (view part one in the November issue of Electronic Specifier Design), Erik Babbé, Marketing Brand Manager for Oscilloscopes, Keysight Technologies, offers ten tips for better power supply measurement.
QML Class V microcircuit drawings for radiation hardened components

Part types now available to QML Class V are RH1013 and RH1014 op amps; RH1498 and RH1499 precision rail-to-rail op amps; and RH1009 and RH1021-10 voltage references. QML Class V components are intended for use in the most demanding space flight applications and must me...
Next-gen smartphone battery inspired by the gut
Researchers have developed a prototype of a next-gen lithium-sulphur battery which takes its inspiration in part from the cells lining the human intestine. The batteries, if commercially developed, would have five times the energy density of the lithium-ion batteries used in smartphones and other electronics.
