Power supplies extend 7-year warranty RWS-B series
TDK has announced the introduction of the RWS1000B and RWS1500B series of AC/DC power supplies, extending TDK-Lambda’s popular 7-year warranty 50 to 600W RWS-B range. Rated at 1000W and 1500W output power, the units are available with 12V, 15V, 24V, 36V and 48V outputs. Both series feature screw terminal blocks with covers, in place of widely used busbars, allowing easy connection of the output cables.
MOSFET driver provides 100% duty cycle capability
Analog Devices, which recently acquired Linear Technology, has announced the LTC7001, a high speed, high side N-channel MOSFET driver that operates up to a 150V supply voltage. Its internal charge pump fully enhances an external N-channel MOSFET switch, enabling it to remain on indefinitely. The LTC7001’s powerful 1Ω gate driver can easily drive large gate capacitance MOSFETs with very short transition times and 35ns propagation delay...
Battery-free cellphone harvests ambient power
University of Washington researchers have invented a cellphone that requires no batteries - a major leap forward in moving beyond chargers, cords and dying phones. Instead, the phone harvests the few microwatts of power it requires from either ambient radio signals or light. The team also made Skype calls using its battery-free phone, demonstrating that the prototype made of commercial, off-the-shelf components can receive and transmit ...
Acquisition strengthens Advanced Energy's power portfolio
Precision power company, Advanced Energy Industries, has announced it has acquired Excelsys Holdings, a privately held company based in Cork, Ireland. Excelsys designs and manufactures high efficiency and highly reliable power supplies for a variety of industrial markets. Its modular and user-configurable technology brings new and differentiated capabilities to Advanced Energy’s existing product portfolio. This new product line allows Advan...
Flat wire power inductor offers higher saturation current
A flat wire power inductor with very high current loading capacity and efficiency has been introduced by Würth Elektronik eiSos, the WE-HCF in a 2815 package. The latest member of the WE-HCF series is loadable up to 36A and attains saturation currents up to 125A. With its large wire cross-section, the inductor offers a 13% lower resistance than comparable products on the market and attains an up to 82% higher saturation current.
Scanning the surface of lithium titanate
Researchers at Tokyo Institute of Technology, Tohoku University, and the University of Tokyo have applied advanced scanning methods to visualise the previously unexplored surface of a superconductor, lithium titanate (LiTi2O4). LiTi2O4 is the only known example of a so-called spinel1 oxide superconductor. Its rarity makes LiTi2O4 of enormous interest to those studying the origins of superconductivity, as it has the highest superconducting tr...
Harsh environment DC/DC converters offer up to 92% efficiency
Additional models have been introduced to TDK's HQA series of harsh environment DC/DC converters. The series now includes both 85 and 120W ratings with output voltages of 5, 12, 15, 24, 28 and 48V. The input voltage is 9-40V for the 5-28V units and 18-40V for the 48V unit. All models can withstand a 50V surge for 1s. With efficiencies of up to 92%, the HQA series is suited for use in COTS, communications and industrial equipment.
UK facility expanded to meet increasing power supply demand
Designer and manufacturer of power supplies and cable products, Stadium Stontronics, has significantly upgraded its Reading-based facility with the addition of a new dedicated manufacturing cell fully equipped for the production of custom power supplies, a new warehouse space to accommodate an additional 700 pallets of storage, plus a large ESD controlled test facility.
SMD solid-state fuse suitable for harsh applications
An extremely robust SMD fuse has been introduced by SCHURTER. The new High Current Fuse, HCF, has been designed using solid-state/thin-film technology. The HCF is especially suited for use in particularly harsh applications, where the reliable interrupt of high currents is critical. SCHURTER's experience, acquired from the development of solid-state fuses for the space industry, and the cooperation with ESA, have led to the development of the HCF...
Half brick 150W DC/DC converters offer 8:1 input range
A series of 150W half brick DC/DC converters has been announced by XP Power, aimed at a wide range of applications where an ultra-wide input range are required. Conforming to the industry standard half brick footprint of 61.5x57.9x12.7mm (2.40x2.28x0.50"), and having pin out compatibility with existing industry standards, the QSB150 is highly efficient, typically up to 92%.
