Anti-aliasing minimises LCD font distortion
demmel products has announced the Font Anti-Aliasing feature for its entire product range, providing dramatically enhanced typography in user interfaces. Anti-aliasing provides smoother, more aesthetically-pleasing typography on the company's intelligent LCDs, reducing the jarring effect of frazzled, sharp, step-like letter edges, for an overall smoother appearance and improved readability.
LCD touch screens can be used with stylus & gloved fingers
Varitronix has announced a range of projected capacitive LCD touchscreens, which can be used with a stylus, a gloved finger or bare finger. The screens have been developed to operate with Varitronix's in-house software which allows the touch technology to be optimised to differentiate between false and genuine touches.
Industrial panel PC suits harsh environments
DFI has launched KS310-IMX6, a Freescale i.MX6 processor-based fanless Panel PC using a 10.1” (1280x800) industrial grade LCD panel with projected capacitive touch solution and ARM architecture four/two Cortex-A9 processor at only 1.0GHz. To withstand harsh operating environments, KS310-IMX6 is made with a robust mechanical design and can operate from -20 to +60°C.
EVE ICs support up to 800x600px for larger displays
FTDI Chip has expanded its Embedded Video Engine (EVE) portfolio for advanced HMI implementation with four ICs supporting higher maximum screen resolutions than previously possible. The FT81xQ series supports up to 800x600px, increasing from the 512x512px of the FT800Q/801Q series, in order to address the larger displays (7" and above) used in point-of-sales units, information kiosks, etc.
Ambient light & proximity sensor saves battery power
Integrating an IR emitter, photo detectors for proximity and ambient light, a signal processing IC and a 16-bit ADC, the VCNL4040 has been introduced by Vishay Intertechnology. The three-in-one sensor saves power as a proximity sensor by disabling touch screens until a user is detected and uses its integrated ambient light function for display/keypad adaptive brightness control and backlighting.
Improve LED brightness in battery-powered devices
Current sensing resistors, designed to improve LED brightness and efficiency in portable battery-powered applications, have been introduced by Vishay Precision Group. The LED1625 and LED221, which expand the company’s Vishay Foil Resistors, provide low TCR of 0.05ppm/°C nominal (0 to +60°C) and 0.2ppm/°C nominal (-55 to +125°C,+25°C ref.), load-life stability of ±0.005% and tight tolerances to ±0.01%.

Multi-touch film is rollable & flexible
Zytronic has introduced a rollable and extremely flexible touch film which utilises the company’s proprietary Multi-touch Projected Capacitive Technology (MPCT). The ZYFILM enables customers to create their own touch screen displays by laminating the film on to the rear of a transparent substrate, such as a shop window, and combining it with a projector or LCD.
Plastic LCDs are cheap, light, thin & shatterproof
The partnership between FlexEnable and Merck has yielded an LCD which is completely free of glass, instead using organic transistors on a plastic sheet. Plastic LCD technology has the potential to make products ten times thinner, more than ten times lighter and cheaper than conventional glass-based displays while being shatterproof and even conformal.
