Lights-out manufacturing less than a decade away
Read more
As more tasks become automated across manufacturing, these environments will rely less and less upon manual human labour, with the ultimate goal of 'lights-out' manufacturing. Lights-out manufacturing is a methodology in which manufacturing is fully automated and requires no human presence so that the lights and even ventilation can be shut off. Achieving lights-out manufacturing is a major goal for many companies, but it might not be realistic due to significant barriers and a prolonged timeline, according to new analysis from Lux Research, a provider of tech-enabled research and innovation advisory services.

Choosing the right wireless technology - Part 2
Read more
In part one of this series, we explored several considerations for selecting the ideal wireless technology for a design. We reviewed frequency spectrum, licensed and un-licensed spectrum, as well as several common bands. We also discussed communication range and various factors that influence range such as the output power and the sensitivity of the receiver. Part one ended with a discussion about network topology, exploring mesh versus point to multi-point and some of the associated trade-offs like cost, power consumption, and latency. Dan Clement, Senior Principal Solutions Marketing Engineer, ON Semiconductor.
