Cables/Connecting
Creating challenges and opportunities for connector manufacturers
The Internet of Things is a common topic, as the next great wave of technology which will drive the electronics industry forward with 50 billion devices connected to the Internet by 2020, according to some experts. Alan Jermyn explains.
USB Type-C cables and connector are waterproofed
Waterproof USB Type-C cables and connector from Amphenol LTW are now being shipped by Mouser Electronics. These cables and space-saving receptacles provide data and power connectivity and transmission. The cables feature a waterproof USB Type-C connector on one end and a non-waterproof USB 2.0 or USB 3.0 Type-A connector on the other.
Nano-fit power connectors virtually eliminate terminal backout
Molex has introduced Nano-Fit Power Connectors, which provide terminal protection with what the company claims to be the smallest fully isolated terminal power connector in the market. In addition, keying options ensure proper mating and a Terminal Position Assurance (TPA) feature virtually eliminates terminal backout.
Low profile wire-to-board connectors for miniature applications
In order to deliver a space-saving, low profile, wire-to-board connectivity solution for miniature applications, Hirose has introduced the DF58 series. The connector range consists of crimp sockets and headers in a single row. The mated height profile is minimised to 1.0mm and the depth to 4.97mm to reduce the space needed on the board.
USB-C connectors cover wide range of design applications
The new MUSBR series of ruggedised USB-C connectors and dust caps from Amphenol is now available at RS Components. Designed for use by electronic design engineers working with the latest USB Type-C technology, applications cover diverse sectors including: smartphones, tablets, PCs and laptops; power packs and chargers; and applications in areas such as industrial machinery.
Fibre optic series provides highly customisable connectors
A high-bandwidth interconnect solution that provides maximum performance and reliability for commercial and military aviation and shipboard systems has been introduced by ITT’s Cannon brand.
Docking frame enables blind mating of inserts in drawers
TE Connectivity (TE) has launched the HDC Thermoplastic Docking Frame for the company’s HMN series of Heavy Duty Connector (HDC) inserts. It enables blind mating of the inserts in drawers, allowing the connectors to guide themselves into the correct mating positions in environments where direct visibility or access is limited. No tools are needed to unlock the modules either.
Peelable maskant provides protection for PWB connectors
Distributor of industrial adhesives and adhesive applicators, Ellsworth Adhesives Europe has expanded its product range with the addition of the Dymax SpeedMask 9-7001. This peelable maskant for PWB connectors and board level is designed to create protection for connectors and board surfaces during solvent based or light-curable conformal coating applications in PWB assembly.
Expanded connector range supported by catalogue launch
New board to board, wire to board, USB and RJ connectors with built in magnetics are among the 700 new Taicom products added by Anglia, in a substantial expansion of its offering from the connector manufacturer. In addition to featuring the full portfolio on Anglia Live, the distributor is publishing a new 136-page connector selection guide giving details of both new and established parts.
Advancing standards in USB technology
Back in April 2014, at the Intel Developers Forum in Shenzhen, China, the USB Type-C connector made its debut. Now commercially available, the connector features a particularly significant technical advance – it’s vertically symmetrical so it doesn’t matter which way up you put the plug into the socket.
