Campbell Collins Ltd, a specialist supplier of power supplies, capacitors and hi-rel power semiconductors, is pleased to announce the availability of a range of TO-220 footprint compatible switching regulators from Arch Electronics, which offer customers an ultra high efficiency alternative to LMxx Linear Regulator devices.
The SR78/1000 series has a wide input range of 4.6V to 36V; nominal set point output voltages of 1.5V, 1.8V, 2.5V, 3.3V, 5V, 6.5V, 9V, 12V & 15V; and delivers up to 1A of output current at efficiencies of up to 96%. Non standard output voltages can also be offered on request. Since the efficiency of the SR78/1000 is so much higher than the LMxx style of Linear Regulators, heatsinks are not required which makes for far simper mechanical and thermal designs, and much higher long term reliability. The high efficiency also means that power levels of up to 15W are available from a tiny 3-pin SIP package measuring just 11.5mm(W) x 10.2mm(H) x 7.55mm(D).

The SR78/1000 series come with Over Current Protection, Short Circuit Protection and Over Temperature Protection as standard, and are housed in a UL94V-0 rated package. Operating temperature range is -40°C to +85°C, and storage temperature range is -55°C to +125°C, making the devices suitable for a wide range of demanding applications. Typically, derating is not necessary unless operating above 60°C, and so the power density of the devices is as high as 280W/in3. The MTBF figure is in excess of 5Mhrs, and they come with a 2 year manufacturer’s warranty.

“The SR78/1000 series offers our customers an ultra high efficiency alternative to unreliable, inefficient Linear Regulators” said Phil Goff, Sales & Marketing Manager for Campbell Collins. “Having the opportunity to improve their systems’ reliability without the need for a board redesign is a huge benefit to the customer” he continued.
