As one of the worlds largest producers of LCD controllers and displays for the mobile phone market, Epson has developed the S1D13710 and S1D13712 LCD-controllers.These devices have been designed to meet the demands of portable products requiring Digital Video, such as Mobile Communications devices offering the latest multimedia messaging services (MMS) and Palm-size PCs. These devices can now be supplied by 2001 Electronic Components.
These products provide complete image processing control by provision of CMOS camera interface, built-in JPEG compression engine as well as main LCD and secondary LCD controllers. Processing the image data in hardware overcomes the tendency for slow response when using the baseband CPU. Furthermore, the power consumption is much reduced when compared with a software approach.

The S1D13712 features includes 320Kbytes on-chip VRAM, 2-port VGA(max) camera interface, hardware YUV to RGB converter, 16-bit host CPU interface, hardware JPEG codec and 2D bitBLT hardware graphics accelleration. It is capable of driving two 240 x 320 TFT or parallel/serial RAM LCD panels at up to 16M colours.

Graphics processing includes functions such as mirroring, picture-in-picture and overlay with transparency. Additionally the S1D13712 offers SwivelView™ capability which allows the image to be rotated by 90,180 or 270 degrees with no software overhead.

The lower cost S1D13710 has all the features of the S1D13712 but with 224K on-chip VRAM and capability to display 64K colours.

The devices have built-in PLL, allowing external clock input from 32KHz to 40-55MHz. They are packaged in 160-pin ceramic BGA packages measuring only 8mm square and run on a 1.8V core with 3V I/O. Samples are available already.

Epson is aiming at a monthly volume production output of 2 million units by March 2003. These controllers provide impressive support for cellular and other mobile solutions requiring Digital Video support, however, their impartiality to operating system makes them an ideal display solution for a wide variety of other applications.
