From its 40,000 sq ft dedicated engineering facility at Knowsley, Liverpool, MPE Ltd has specialised for most of its 85 years in the design and manufacture of EMC (Electromagnetic Compatibility) filter and capacitor solutions for the world’s fighting vehicles, navies, weapon systems, tactical shelters, power supplies, radar, computing and communications facilities, including acoustic booths and screened rooms for Britain’s MOD.
Over that period, thousands of MPE’s EMC filters and feedthrough capacitors have been successfully deployed and proven in the field, for most of the major OEMs in the defence sector.

So now, in response to customers’ recent requests, the company has launched pre-compliance EMC testing for the military vehicle market, providing it either on-site or in-house to suit customers’ needs.

Accordingly MPE is delivering a diagnostic pre-compliance EMC test service to help define the most cost-effective choice of EMI suppression to meet stringent military EMC standards such as DEF STAN 59-411 and MIL-STD 461, before major compliance costs are incurred and reducing the risk and worry of failing certification in a test house. Operating a new, portable, Rohde & Schwarz model ESL6 EMI test receiver with very high precision from 9 kHz to 6 GHz frequency, MPE’s evaluation service includes baseline noise measurements, comparison to specifications and identification of local areas and causes of non-compliance.

Pre-compliance testing allows you to make changes during the design phase based upon real-world test results. The earlier that product deficiencies are identified during the development process, the easier, less expensive and less time-consuming it is to rectify problems. Rework or even redesign at the point of production usually comes at a high cost.

So, having quickly pinpointed sources of radiated or conducted noise, individual pieces of vehicle equipment can be tackled, even down to bench level, to define the appropriate screening or filtration solution.

As a longstanding supplier to the UK MOD, NATO and defence forces around the world, MPE holds the relevant defence and international standards approvals and has the experience, expertise and products to protect all types of vehicle equipment.

That includes alternators, HVAC, power supplies and power management systems, generators, motors for windscreen wipers, washers and blowers, oil cooler fans, communications systems and NBC / CBRN threat detection and protection technologies. All of MPE’s EMC protection solutions are RoHS compliant where applicable and come with full technical support and application advice.

In addition, MPE’s Engineering Department provides a rapid prototyping service utilising specialist test facilities, a dual chamber screened room, proprietary filter and capacitor design software and a portfolio of over 20,000 custom product designs.

With such capabilities behind it, MPE’s new pre-compliance EMC test service can identify an EMC issue and the right solution to deal with it at an early stage, before it grows into a major problem that will incur serious costs and delays on a military vehicle project.
