Field-wireable, snap-in locking M8 signal cable connectors are designed for efficient and reliable installations in sensor and actuator applications, says binder.

Extending the company's straight, over-moulded M8 snap-in connectors in the 718 series, five- and six-pin models have been released. They have a snap-in, quick locking action and are intended for signal transmission using sensor and actuators in industrial applications where installation space may be limited. The locking mechanism does not require any rotating elements, which makes these connectors particularly easy to handle, says the company.

They are available with either PUR or PVC cables in standard lengths up to 2.0 or 5.0m.Customised lengths are available on request.

Automation applications require reliable operation as well as resistance to the harsh industrial environment, while small size, flexibility, scalability and fast installation are important.  According to the company, circular connectors with screw-lock or quick-lock functions are typically used for signal transmission in industrial sensor-actuator applications. Secure locking and industry relevant degrees of protection are also important in plant engineering, conveyor technology and within drones. M8 connectors are a space-saving design and the variety of pin counts makes them suitable for a range of products.

The electrical connection is established by mating and unmating, while the mechanical locking is provided by means of snap-in elements. These are pushed axially into one another during the mating process and then held in position by spring force. In order to release the connection, this force must be overcome and the plug pulled off backwards in an axial movement. As the connector latches and unlatches, a clicking sound will be heard. A major advantage over screw or bayonet locking types is that the snap-in technique does not require any rotating elements, points out binder.

The M8 snap-in circular connectors in the 718 series are now offered with pin counts ranging from three to six. They meet the IP65 protection degree requirements when mated. Contacts are gold-plated brass for male and bronze for female contacts and these allow in excess of 50 mating cycles.

Rated voltages are between 30 and 60V, suitable for rated currents of 1.5 to 3.0A, depending on the wire gauge and number of pins. three- and four-pin versions are specified for 2.0A (0.14mm2 wire gauge) and for 4.0A (0.25mm2, 0.34mmand AWG 22), respectively. The five- and six-pin versions are for 3.0A and 1.5A, respectively. They withstand rated impulse voltages of 1500V (three- and four-pin versions) and 800V (five- and six-pin models).

All connectors in the series operate from -40 °C to +70 °C in static condition.
