Enabling accurate and reliable monitoring of high operating temperatures for next-gen powertrains, a high performance sensor interface IC has been announced by Melexis. The MLX90327 can operate over a temperature range from -40 to +155°C without compromising accuracy. This makes it also suited for braking systems of trucks and high temperature industrial processes.

The device includes a digital SENT interface for advanced powertrain ECUs and can be supplied with a PWM output for general-purpose automotive and non-automotive applications. Both Pt-sensors and thermocouples can be conditioned and monitored, enabling thermocouples to measure temperatures up to 1300°C. On-board-diagnostics features allow detection of sensor faults, while extensive overvoltage and ESD protection ensure longevity.

Environmental concerns and stringent legislation is increasing demand for more energy efficient vehicles. Higher working temperatures, which must be strictly controlled and monitored at all times, are required in order to increase the operational effectiveness and decrease the environmental impact of the powertrain.

The high temperature capabilities of MLX90327 will allow more energy efficient turbo chargers and better cleaning treatments of exhaust gases via the higher operating temperatures supported in the exhaust gas recirculation system, diesel particle filter and diesel oxidation catalyst.
