OmniVision Technologies has announced in advance of COMPUTEX Virtual , a 1/7-inch, two megapixel image sensor, the OV02C, for full high definition (HD) video performance in thin bezel premium notebooks, tablets and IoT devices.

The sensor offers 60 frames per second (fps) and excellent pixel performance in the thinnest 3mm module Y size for high screen-to-body ratio designs.

“Remote work, online education and telemedicine are becoming the norm today, significantly increasing demand for small, portable notebooks and tablets, but consumers have been hindered by the video quality of these products,” said Akeem Chen, Product Marketing Manager at OmniVision. “We’ve addressed this problem with our new OV02C sensor that enables a smooth, high quality video experience while on the go. It is also ideal for small form factor battery-operated IoT devices.”

According to an April 29, 2021 report by Strategy Analytics, the tablet market posted 44% year over year increase in Q1 2021―the highest in eight years―as COVID has reshaped consumers’ views on working from home beyond the pandemic.

“Productivity is a part of most vendor line-ups now, which lends well to work and learn-from-home demand. Even as laptop demand stays hot, Windows Detachables are showing growth once again. And, as we all seek ways of unwinding at home, tablets provide flexibility in being able to enjoy videos, games, and communication,” said Chirag Upadhyay, industry analyst within the Intelligent Home team at Strategy Analytics.

The camera space for large bezel screen tablets is continually getting smaller in high screen-to-body ratio designs, presenting challenges for pixel technology and performance. This has resulted in reduced video performance in today’s notebooks and tablets. The new OV02C combines smaller pixel size and high resolution in the smallest form factor, enabling the most vivid quality video and image capabilities.

OmniVision’s PureCel Plus-S stacked die technology enables such high functionality in the smallest die size. This next-generation pixel technology also provides higher color fidelity and excellent low light sensitivity, along with a high signal-to-noise ratio of 37.5 dB for crisper images. Additionally, PureCel Plus-S provides higher full well capacity, zero blooming and lower power consumption.

The OV02C’s ‘Always On’ feature senses user presence in ultra-low-power mode and the system can be locked and woken up touchlessly, extending the lifetime of the battery. The OV02C also supports multi camera synchronisation and multi-frame HDR at 30fps real time video streaming.

Samples of the OV02C are available now.
