The multi-sensor IoT prototyping kit Nordic Thingy:91 from Nordic Semiconductor is now available at Rutronik UK. Designed for IoT applications based on the nRF9160 SiP (System-in-Package), the new kit features the nRF52840 for short-range radio connection and a broad collection of sensors and interfaces, which makes it highly versatile and enables rapid prototyping and proof of concept.

It fits a variety of applications, including logistics and asset tracking, metering, smart city, smart agriculture, wearables and medical, predictive maintenance and industry 4.0.

The battery-operated prototyping platform is based on the nRF9160 SiP, which has a separate application/radio modem architecture aiding development simplicity and overall performance.

The dedicated radio system supports LTE-M and NB-IoT technologies as well as GPS for precise positioning.

Furthermore, the nRF9160 SiP incorporates the latest Arm Cortex-M33 as powerful application processor with Arm TrustZone for secure boot and execution within the device.

For short-range applications, the Nordic Thingy:91 contains the multiprotocol SoC (Sytem-on-a-Chip) nRF52840 with a broad range of protocols including Bluetooth 5 and NFC.

A pre-loaded asset tracking application that uses many of the on-kit sensors as well as LTE-M and GPS offers a working out-of-the-box asset tracking and monitoring.

The prototyping kit can, however, be reprogrammed with any dedicated application of the user’s choice.

Moreover, the kit has a Nano/4FF SIM card slot and already contains a SIM card to enable an instant start of development.
