‘It all starts with a sensor’ – the importance of sensors in IoT
Hardware Pioneers is a group of over 6,000 startup founders, executives, engineers and developers that come together every month in London to listen to industry talks and establish new connections. Last week, Electronic Specifier attended Hardware Pioneers’ latest event entitled ‘All About IoT sensors’. The evening consisted of presentations, community announcements and a networking session.
Idneo and Jarvish to develop smart motorcycle helmets
Idneo, the Ficosa group’s engineering firm specialised in the development of high-added-value technological products for the automotive, medical equipment, consumer electronics, industrial and smart solutions sectors, has signed a collaboration agreement with Jarvish, a Taiwanese smart-helmets company, to jointly develop the sector’s most innovative smart helmets, which will be sold on the European market.
ULIS experiences 20% annual growth rate in thermal image sensors
Manufacturer of thermal sensors, ULIS, has announced that it will again significantly increase its R&D spending for 2017 to reach €15m ($16.8m). This investment marks the company’s strong growth and market leadership progression over the last 15 years. ULIS generated €61.5m ($69.3m) in sales in 2016, a rise of nearly 30% compared to 2015. Buoyed by the spurt in additional growth and market changes, ULIS’ new level o...
Safety tools support Renesas automotive RH850 MCUs
IAR Systems has announced an extension of its tools offering for safety-related software development with the launch of a functional safety edition for IAR Embedded Workbench for Renesas Electronics’ RH850 Family of automotive microcontrollers (MCUs).
OEM fibre optic temperature sensor shown at Sensors Expo 2017
Sensors Expo, taking place 28-29th June, will see Micronor debuting there, after the announcement that it has collaborated with Optocon AG to create the FOTEMP1-OEM-MNT; a low cost, small form factor, single channel signal conditioner that seamlessly integrates fibre optic temperature sensing into any industrial control system, medical instrumentation or other OEM design.
Providing a safe connection between continents
The Eurasia tunnel is a 5.4km road tunnel which links two areas of Istanbul and spans both Europe and Asia, meaning it is the first undersea road tunnel to connect two continents. For such a project a secure and reliable public safety communications system is vital. Cobham Wireless has delivered its multi-band, multi-technology coverage solution to the project which provides the emergency services communication within the tunnel.
Accurate temperature measurement based on MEMS tech
Omron Electronic Components has extended its non-contact MEMS thermal sensor range with a new narrow-field version specifically designed to provide accurate non-contact measurements of an objects’ surface temperature for industrial control, medical and building automation systems. Omron is relaunching its full range of MEMS thermal sensors in Europe, including wider field versions ideal for detecting room occupancy and similar applications.
CCD image sensor improves imaging performance
Driving energy efficient innovations, ON Semiconductor is improving performance for industrial imaging applications that require both high resolution image capture and maximum image uniformity. The new 29MP KAI-29052 image sensor provides up to twice the imaging sensitivity of the existing KAI-29050 in the wavelength range of 500-1,050nm. This improved performance is particularly beneficial to applications operating in near-infrared (NIR) wavelen...
Extremely sensitive hydrogen sensor detects the smallest leaks
Hydrogen is a highly promising energy carrier. But it can also be dangerous, as it is combustible and difficult to detect. Using hydrogen safely requires sensors that can detect even the smallest of leaks. Researchers from Delft University of Technology (TU Delft, The Netherlands), KU Leuven (Belgium) and the Rutherford Appleton Laboratory (UK) have discovered that the metal hafnium is perfect for the job.
Could motorcycle accidents be prevented with technology?
Autotalks is launching its Bike-to-Vehicle (B2V) solution, a technology for the prevention of motorcycle accidents. The solution is based on the B2X (Bike-to-Everything) chipset developed by the Israeli company.
