Inertial modules support unmanned aerial vehicles
MEMSIC has announced the addition of the VG380 to its portfolio of inertial modules. These new vertical gyros provide highly accurate pitch and roll (with respect to gravity), in both static and dynamic conditions, at a very attractive size and price points. The static and dynamic accuracy is specified at +/-0.2 and +/-1.0 degrees (respectively) over the -40C to +85C temperature range. The VG380 is offered in two package/interface options, V...
Single turn rotary position sensors offer accuracy and longevity
Global provider of engineered electronics for performance critical applications, TT Electronics, has launched the PHS family of rotary position sensors that provide precision sensing in harsh environments and in critical applications where repair costs would be be high in the case of a failure. The hollow shaft single turn position sensors have been designed and built to embrace three main design points; precision, robustness and reliability...
Encoder compatible with ISO/IEC 14496-2 specification
Manufacturer of integrated systems, embedded boards, enabling software and application-ready platforms, VadaTech, has announced the AMC350 Quad HDMI/DVI H.264 Encoder. This AdvancedMC (AMC) single-module design encodes full HD to H.264, MPEG-4 and H.263 with throughput up to 1,920x1,088 at 60 frames per second in a compact multi-channel unit. The MPEG4-SP encoder is compatible with the ISO/IEC 14496-2 specification.
Safety report focuses on vulnerable road users
A new 2017 Traffic Safety Report from Volvo Trucks has found that although the number of serious road accidents involving trucks is dropping, the safety of vulnerable road users’ needs to be improved - and there are still far too few truck drivers using their seat belts.
The latest Automotive Dead Reckoning (ADR) firmware
u-blox has announced availability of its latest Automotive Dead Reckoning (ADR) firmware providing leading performance in navigation, Telematics, eCall and V2X applications for both OEM and after-market applications. Firmware ADR4.10 offers real-time, low latency positioning at up to 30 Hz using a combination of multi-GNSS, inertial sensor and vehicle speed data. This release also offers simplified installation, improved accuracy in the most urba...

The Heraeus Sensor Technology USA line of thin film platinum resistance temperature detectors (RTDs) is now available worldwide through Digi-Key Electronics.as part of a new distribution agreement. Heraeus thin film platinum RTD elements are characterized by high stability, interchangeability, and fast response time.
Enhancing safety by using your head
Researchers are using crash test dummies, with Diversified Technical Systems (DTS) data recorders, to test American football helmets in the lab to improve player safety on the field.
Force sensing broadens its application horizons
Peratech’s force sensing technology is moving from the lab into consumer products and beyond. By Sally Ward-Foxton. British startup Peratech, whose QTC force sensitive material allows force sensors to screen print onto a range of substrates, is starting to see its first QTC-enabled consumer products on the market. Following investment in 2014, a new executive team was brought on board and the company’s business model changed from...
Industry standards for optimum sensor specification
The sensor market has not reached its full potential yet, and according to a report by the market research firm BCC Research, the market is still expected to grow by more than ten percent by 2020. Leslie Neill, Senior Product Manager, Honeywell Safety and Productivity Solutions, investigates.
Intelligent safety system reduces risk of traffic accidents
Considerable demands are being imposed on drivers of both commercial vehicles and cars as a result of more vehicles on the roads, a faster traffic flow and a distracting stream of information. On the other hand, there have never been more opportunities for the person behind the wheel to drive more safely than there is today. The active safety systems found in many modern cars and trucks make it far easier to avoid incidents and accidents than eve...
