Wurth Electronics Midcom and Texas Instruments have jointly developed a series of four new transformers which extends the transformer selection for the SN6501 power driver. The new series of parts is an extension to the 2500VAC isolated parts released last year by Wurth. The new series is a 5000VAC isolated series designed to comply with the requirements for the medical electrical equipment standard, IEC60601-1, for providing two means of patient protection for working voltages up to 250VAC.

This new series from Wurth Electronics Midcom also provides the necessary protection for many other standards defined in the industrial sector. The industrial, process control and medical markets all require isolated interfaces in order to protect equipment from disturbances. Additionally, both humans and equipment require protection from safety hazards that may exhibit themselves in cases of equipment fault conditions. When isolation of the communications channel is needed for a measure of protection, then the associated power supply power must be isolated as well, or a potential hazard may exist.

The power driver from Texas Instruments is used in CAN, RS-485, RS-232, SPI, I2C or Low-Power LAN channels to communicate between pieces of equipment. The driver creates a small, low-cost solution to provide isolated power from 3.3V to either a 3.3V or 5V output voltage; as well from 5V to either a 3.3V or 5V output voltage.

“Wurth Electronics Midcom designed the high voltage series of parts to provide a small, cost-effective transformer solution that not only complies with the safety standards, but also has output regulation and efficiency both with and without an LDO,” commented Wurth's Dean Huumala.

The series addresses all combinations of 3.3V and 5V on the input and output. In line with requirements in the industrial sector, Wurth Electronics Midcom designed this series to operate at a temperature range of -40°C to +125°.
