The XC6229 series is a high speed LDO regulator housed in an ultra-small LGA-4B01 package. Measuring only 0.75mm x 0.75mm x 0.3mm, the LGA-4B01 is the latest in a long line of ultra small packages from Torex. It utilises a new construction technique, removing the need for traditional bonding wires in favour of direct connection between die and pads. This allows for significant improvements in thermal performance resulting in higher power dissipation when compared with traditional packaging techniques.

The small package size makes the XC6229 ideal for space-saving designs. But this is not the end of the story, for the XC6229 also offers high accuracy, low output noise and high ripple rejection (typically 80dB at 1kHz).

The LGA-4B01 package construction offers benefits in other areas as well. By removing the need for bonding wires between the die and pad we also reduce the total resistance between the input and output pins of the LDO by an appreciable amount. As a result the XC6229’s drop-out voltage is typically only 160mV @ 300mA (VOUT=3.0V) which helps to extend usable battery life in portable electronic devices.

Others features of the XC6229 series include a chip enable pin to turn the IC on and off, a CL discharge function to quickly discharge the output capacitor when the IC is turned off.

Power consumption is typically 100μA during operation, reducing to 0.01μA in standby mode.

The XC6229 also include a number of protection circuits, and the IC will be forced to stop operating by the thermal shutdown circuit when the chip’s temperature reaches 150ºC. This function is implemented using hysteresis, and will allow the XC6229 to resume normal operation when the chip’s temperature drops below 125ºC.

In addition the XC6229 includes an over current protection circuit that not only stops the IC when the output current is too high, but also permits the IC to automatically resume normal operation as soon as the over-current condition disappears. In-rush current protection is also included to help manage the start-up phase.

The XC6229 is fully compatible with low ESR ceramic capacitors at the input and output stages. The output voltage is selectable in 0.05V increments within the range of 1.2V to 4.0V with a ±1% tolerance as standard. The operating voltage range is from 1.6V to 5.5V.
