PHS capacitors handle high voltage management applications

The T550 and T551 series Polymer Hermetic Seal (PHS) capacitors from Kemet are now available in Europe from distributor TTI. The components have specifically been designed for high voltage management applications and feature conductive organic polymer as the cathode plate of the capacitor instead of the traditionally used MnO2 or wet electrolyte.

This results in very low ESR and improved capacitance retention at high frequency and low temperature. With that, the devices provide the highest total capacitance and the most economical solution for high power applications (up to 80V), all within an approximately 25% lighter package than the equivalent wet tantalum capacitor.

T550/T551 series capacitors exhibit a benign failure mode which eliminates the case breach that can occur in wet tantalum types. Additionally, the parts may be operated at voltages up to 80% of rated voltage with equivalent or better reliability than traditional MnO2 or wet tantalum capacitors operated at 50% of rated voltage.

T550/T551 Series PHS also benefit from higher ripple current handling capability and a lower ESR range than wet tantalums.

The PGS capacitors are available in MIL–PRF–39006/22/25/30/31 case sizes and have been approved by the Defense Logistics Agency (DLA). They are also ideal for use in harsh environments (Space) and 48Volt applications (RoHS or Lead (Pb) options are available).
