Semtech announces the uClamp™3304A, a 3.3V electrostatic discharge (ESD) protection device with the performance needed for next-generation portable designs, and packaged in an ultra small SC-89 package that is pin compatible with 5V protection devices for a simplified board design.
The uClamp3304A protects up to four lines from ESD, features low leakage current for longer battery life and a low clamping voltage range for superior protection. The device’s SC-89 package is one of the smallest multi-line packages available, measuring 1.7 x 1.7 x 0.6 mm. It can be dropped into designs that previously used either an SOT-666- or SC-89-based 5V device, resulting in a more reliable solution for systems operating at sub 5 volts.
The uClamp3304A is constructed using Semtech’s patented EPD TVS process technology yielding true 3.3 operating voltages. In addition to low operating voltage, this process yields other advantages including low capacitance. The uClamp3304A is rated for less than 30pF of capacitance, enabling its use on higher speed lines such as keypads, LED’s, and multimedia card interfaces found in today’s cellular handsets.

The uClamp3304A is part of Semtech’s MicroClamp™ ESD protection family. The device augments the recently announced uClamp3324P 3.3V protection device, which offers the same feature set, but is packaged in a flow through SLP2116P8 package. The uClamp3324P minimizes the board redesign needed to upgrade from discrete multi-line varistors in applications where the designer needs to save board space or improve protection.

The lead-free design of the device meets worldwide environmental and regulatory requirements including the European Union’s Restriction on Hazardous Substances in Electrical and Electronic Equipment (RoHS) directive.
