Optical switches allow signals to be connected from one optical fibre to a number of other fibres in turn. Applications include allowing sources or detectors to be shared, automating a test and measurement setup and swapping to a reference signal. LASER COMPONENTS can provide optical switches based on a variety of technologies to suit requirements.

One of the most versatile is based on a piezo technology. This range is available in a large number of fibre types including single mode at short wavelengths, multimode, large core and polarisation maintaining fibres.

Standard configurations include 1x2 to 1x16 and 2x2 to 2x8, with custom versions also available. All versions have a low insertion loss, high optical isolation and excellent repeatability. The optical switches can be easily incorporated into complex setups as an integrated microcontroller provides a number of different interfaces including TTL, RS232 and I2C. The switches are available in a compact housing or as a benchtop unit.
