Sony Europe has announced that it is now shipping its Image Sensing Solutions’ latest GS CMOS camera range, offering advanced features and reliability for machine vision. Comprising four models (the XCG-CG240/C and XCG-CG510/C, available in either black and white or colour), the series utilises Sony’s Pregius global shutter pixel technology to ensure undistorted, high picture quality - even at very high speeds.

These cameras also feature Sony’s Exmor R, a back-illuminated CMOS image sensor with improved sensitivity and noise reduction - the key factors to enhance image quality - while radically realigning their fundamental pixel structure from front-illumination to back-illumination. Exmor R retains all the advantages of CMOS image sensors such as low power consumption and high-speed operation.

The GS CMOS cameras have numerous applications in the machine vision market, including automotive, electronics and semiconductor manufacturing as well as non-manufacturing sectors such as intelligent transport systems, logistics, high-end security and entertainment.

In food manufacturing, for example, Sony’s GS CMOS cameras are able to produce high-resolution images of produced cans at the rate of 120,000 cans per hour. These figures are achieved through the XCG-CG240/C and XCG-CG510/C’s impressive 2.4MP at 40fps (8-bit) and 5.1MP at 23fps (8-bit) and camera Link camera XCL-SG510/C 5.1MP at 150fps (8-bit).

Arnaud Destruels, European Marketing Manager, Image Sensor Solutions, Sony, commented: “There is strong demand in both manufacturing and non-industrial applications in the European machine vision market and growth in 2015 is expected to be 11%. The machine vision market is very challenging and Sony has always been ready to meet these challenges to improve customers’ solutions and with the GS CMOS series cameras we are well placed to support the market with a product that provides market leading levels of performance and reliability.”
