CML Microcircuits has released a new low power, IF/RF Quadrature Demodulator Integrated Circuit. The new CMX970 offers exceptionally low power consumption and high performance over the operating range of 20 to 250 MHz. Designed to meet the challenging requirements of Wireless Data and Analogue/Digital PMR/LMR radio systems, this product builds on the classic superheterodyne receiver technique to realise the ultimate low power IF/RF Quadrature Demodulator. The device can also be used in direct conversion applications in the VHF spectrum.
Low power consumption, flexibility and high performance are key features of the CMX970 which can operate with an I/Q bandwidth >10MHz. The CMX970’s quadrature architecture supports a wide range of modulation types and with its built-in configurability it maintains performance across multiple modulations and bandwidths. The differential outputs are ideal for direct to connection to standard modem and interface IC’s such as CML’s CMX7163, CMX7164, CMX910 and CMX981.

The CMX970 device may be used for conversion to low IF or zero IF (baseband). The demodulator has best in class intermodulation performance, excellent phase and amplitude balance and has two gain control elements which can be independently controlled allowing users to optimise gain / noise / linearity characteristics depending on their system requirements. The device can be controlled and configured via a serial bus or can operate in a direct control mode.

The CMX970 is available now, operates at 3.0V to 3.6V and comes in a very small 16-pin VQFN package. The CMX970 offers the designer excellent performance, flexibility and fast time-to-market. The small, RF-optimised VQFN package, measuring only 4mm x 4mm x 1mm, and with minimal external components make the device ideal for space-constrained applications.
