The Elco connector division of AVX Corporation has added three new versions to its successful 9162 family of SIM card connectors, designed to reduce space and provide extra security. With end users demanding ever slimmer products AVX Elco’s new slim, slide-in 9162 connector reduces the overall installed height of the SIM card to less than 1.70mm, giving a profile from the PCB to the underside of the card of just 0.70mm.

Providing the user with the facility to locate, align and lock the SIM card in place, AVX Elco’s new lockable 9162 connector features a hinged lid with rails to provide alignment for the SIM card. A recess in the moulding ensures that the SIM will not lock if the card is wrongly inserted in to the cover. The connector has an installed height to the base of the SIM of 1.50mm and a total height of 2.50mm for the connector.

With both low profile and lockable versions AVX has maintained all the characteristics of its existing 9162 connector family including a life of 5000 mating cycles and a power rating of 0.5A.

AVX Elco’s new combined memory card device integrates SIM and push/push micro SD connectors within a compact structure, minimising board space yet allowing the two cards to be inserted at the same time. Combi cards are oriented at 90 to each other enabling both cards to be inserted without interference from the other. Durability for the SIM connector is 10000 operations; 6000 operations for the micro SD part.

Comments Jim Gracie, Product Marketing Manager: “SIM cards are commonly used in mobile phones, PDAs and other portable communications devices, but they are also a very cost effective way of adding memory to many other products. Therefore, these new connectors are ideally suited to varied applications including data loggers, GPS units, meters, asset tracking equipment, POS terminals and subscriber identification.” All three new connectors are RoHS compatible and can withstand the latest 260degC reflow soldering processes.
