A miniature lightweight Flexible Printed Circuit (FPC) connector for portable electronic devices that require high speed transmission has been developed by Hirose. The FH53M series FPC connector saves valuable PCB real estate via a back flip style actuator that minimises the required mounting area.

The compact FH53M series FPC connector has a 0.25mm pitch, mounted depth of 3.2mm and height of only 0.65mm. With a weight of 0.01g, the FPC connector is designed for wide range of portable electronics including consumer, medical, point-of-sale and wearable devices.

The FH53M series FPC connector offers excellent impedance characteristics, and delivers high density transmission required to support Embedded DisplayPort (eDP) ver1.3 and MIPI D-PHY ver1.1 standards.

"The expanded miniature flexible printed circuit connector product offering makes it easier for portable device designers to develop smaller and lighter products," said Bill Kysiak, Product Marketing Manager for Hirose Electric USA.

"Compared to other back flip flexible printed circuit connectors on the market, the miniature, lightweight FH53M Series reduces the PCB mounting area by 46% and reduces weight by 60%. The reduction in size and weight, combined with high reliability and high data rates, make the FPC connector family an ideal choice for a broad range of portable devices."

The FH53M series FPC connector has a user-friendly design, which includes wide tapers providing smooth FPC insertion.

The connector has a top contact design that employs a moveable metal spring latch, which ensures high reliability and signal continuity. The metal latching mechanism allows for horizontal FPC insertion/withdrawal, and produces a clear tactile click when insertion is complete.

The FPC tab lock firmly holds the FPC in place until the actuator is locked.

The back flip style actuator and bottom contact design provides a high retention force. The contact design also prevents against solder wicking and flux penetration.

The FH53M series is currently available in a seven-position version. Tooling for additional positions including 9, 11, 33, 39, 41, and 51 is planned for release in 2018. The connector meets halogen-free requirements and is RoHS compliant.

The high speed FH53M series is designed for portable electronics that require high speed transmission, including smart phones, cameras and video recorders, notebooks and tablets, DVD and Blu-Ray players, portable music players, handheld gaming systems, and most any portable medical device.
