Suitable for power system designs for household appliances, DVD players and set top boxes, three current mode, fixed frequency switching regulators have been unveiled by ON Semiconductor. Improving the light load and standby efficiency to meet the ENERGY STAR EPS 2.0 Standard, the NCP1129, NCP1126 and NCP1124 regulators incorporate an avalanche-rated 650V MOSFET and frequency foldback along with skip mode.

Designed for use in compact, high reliability offline AC/DC SMPS (Switched-Mode Power Supplies), the highly integrated devices require minimal external components, significantly reducing the overall bill of materials. Improving EMI performance, the NCP1129, NCP1126, and NCP1124 devices generate a jittered 65 or 100kHz switching frequency and deliver up to 25, 15 and 12W, respectively.

Enabling ramp compensation to maintain stable continuous conduction mode operation, an external resistor can be used to adjust the maximum peak current. The NCP112x regulators allow skip mode to be activated in order to reduce standby power consumption at (or close to) a no load scenario, drawing less than 100mW at high line when in standby mode. Frequency foldback mode permits power conversion efficiency levels to be raised under light load conditions.

Operating over a temperature range from -40 to +150°C, the integrated switching regulators feature built-in thermal shutdown, over-voltage response mechanisms, a 2kV HBM resilience rating to ESD and a 50ms timer-based auto-recovery short-circuit protection function. The auxiliary winding voltage can also independently detect short-circuit fault conditions, ensuring comprehensive safeguards against short-circuit occurrences.

Shane Chilton, Senior Director, AC/DC Power Conversion Products, ON Semiconductor, commented: “This NCP112x series of switchers enable power system design engineers to create more energy efficient and more cost effective power supply designs that will fit into confined spaces. The design flexibility provided by specifying these devices allows engineers to optimise their design implementations for either heightened power efficiency or reduced board real estate.”

Available now in Pb-free PDIP-7 packages, the NCP112x integrated switching regulators are priced from $0.32 each in 10,000 unit quantities.
