Configurable as a single (16A), dual (12A, 4A or 8A, 8A), triple (8A, 4A, 4A) or quad (4A each) output regulator, the LTM4644 step-down µModule regulator has been announced by Linear Technology. With this flexibility, system designers can use one compact µModule regulator to meet the voltage and load current requirements of FPGAs, ASICs and microprocessors.

Suited for communications, data storage, industrial, transportation and medical system applications, the LTM4644 is comprised of the DC/DC controllers, power switches, inductors and compensation components. To regulate four independently adjustable outputs from 0.6-5.5V, the µModule regulator requires only eight external ceramic capacitors (1206 or smaller case sizes) and four feedback resistors (0603 case size). With separate input pins, the four channels can be from different or a common supply rail(s) from 4-14V.

Operating over a temperature range from -40 to +125°C, the µModule regulator is capable of delivering 13A at 1.5V from a 12V input or up to 14A with 200LFM airflow. In order to minimise input ripple, whether at the 1MHz default switching frequency or synchronized to an external clock between 700kHz and 1.3MHz, the four channels operate at 90° out-of-phase. The LTM4644 can regulate from an input supply voltage as low as 2.375V when an external bias supply above 4V is added.

The LTM4644 also features output voltage tracking, internal temperature sensing diode output, external frequency synchronisation, and 1.5% total output voltage regulation. Fault protection features include overvoltage, overcurrent and overtemperature protection.

Supplied in a 9x15x5.01mm BGA package, the LTM4644 µModule regulator is RoHS compliant with prices starting at $22.85 (USD) each for 1,000 unit quantities.
