International Rectifier has today announced the introduction of a new integrated voltage regulator designed for space-constrained, energy efficient netcom, server and storage applications, the IR3823 SupIRBuck. Delivering up to 3A with superior efficiencies in excess of 97.5%, the new IR3823 is available in an ultra-compact 3.5mm x 3.5mm package.

The ultra-high efficiencies of over 97.5% make the IR3823 suited for designs converting power from a 6V input to a 4.8V output. The extremely high initial efficiency allows switching at up to 1.5MHz from a 12V supply. This enables a complete 3A power supply solution in a total area of less than 130mm2. Well suited to noise-sensitive applications, the IR3823 features constant frequency and virtually jitter-free operation with synchronization capability. It also features higher bandwidth to reduce component count and thereby shrink PCB footprint. A tri-level selectable soft-start feature is also offered for ease of sequencing.

Requiring less than 130mm2, the IR3823 is an easy-to-implement solution offering excellent thermal performance. It is therefore perfectly suitable for power conversion directly from a 12V input for space constrained, low current point-of-load applications that require benchmark performance.Featuring programmable switching frequency from 300kHz to 1.5MHz, the IR3823 also features thermally compensated over-current protection, output over-voltage protection and thermal shutdown.

Design tools:

A user friendly, interactive, web-based tool is available at http://mypower.irf.com/SupIRBuck and enables the rapid selection and simulation of selected SupIRBuck products. A SupIRBuck Excel spreadsheet design tool and Icepak thermal model are also available. International Rectifier also offers the IRDC3823 SupIRBuck reference design featuring the new device.
