XP Power has announced availability of the SDS150, a compact, high density, convection cooled power supply that is ideally suited to IT and industrial applications where space is at a premium and there are no internal fans. Both open frame and U channel models can be used in 1U customer applications. The open frame model, 76 x 127 x 36 mm (3 x 5 x 1.44 inches), offers the highest power density of 6.9 watts per cubic inch and the U channel, 81 x 127 x 39 mm (3.2 x 5 x 1.54 inches), density is 6.1 watts per cubic inch.
It is believed that no other competitor offers such a compact, 150 watt convection cooled supply. Similar devices either require forced air cooling, or are larger in size. The highly efficient unit, up to 90%, has a universal input of 90-264 VAC, and there are 8 single output voltage versions ranging from 9 VDC to 48 VDC. No minimum load is required for the unit to start up and maintain stated specifications.
The SDS150 operates at full power from 0 degrees C to +50 degrees C and up to +70 degrees C with derating.

The unit benefits from overvoltage, overcurrent and short circuit protection in order to safeguard connected equipment. An optional power fail detect signal can alert attached hardware of any impending power failure. Unit efficiency is improved by the use of synchronous rectification. This technique uses power MOSFETs in place of traditional diodes as active switches. Such controlled switches act as rectifiers and results in significantly lower losses in the output stage and increased efficiency.

The power supply is approved to UL60950-1 & EN60950-1 safety standards and meets EN55022 level B conducted emissions standards.
