Battery manufacturers face the power budget quandary
Neil Oliver, Technical Manager, Accutronics, explains the power budget quandary medical device designers face, and how battery manufacturers can help.
Load switch provides 36mΩ in 0.76x0.76mm package
Offering a 2A, 1.1-3.6V power rail with controlled turn-on and -off profiles, the SC724, SC725, SC728 and SC729 load switches have been introduced by Semtech. The SC72X family is suitable for portable applications, including wearable electronics, portable video cameras, smartphones and tablets, as well as non-portable applications such as HDTVs, set-top boxes and networking devices.
Battery balancer provides a stand-alone solution
A single IC, stand-alone multicell battery balancer for 12V lead acid batteries has been introduced by Linear Technology. To balance battery charge, the LTC3305 absorbs charge from higher voltage batteries and transfers it to lower voltage batteries. Charge is transferred using a lower capacity battery that is sequentially connected across the batteries in the stack. When absorbing charge, the battery also absorbs energy, adding to the total ener...
100W DC-DC converter offers typical full load efficiency of 93%
GE’s Critical Power business has extended its Orca family of isolated, board-mounted power amplifier modules with the ERCW003A6R 100W, a one-eighth brick DC-DC converter. The efficient converters provide high-voltage and high-power applications with up to 3.6ADC output current at a nominal output voltage of 28VDC.
IGBTs' low switching frequencies suit PV inverters
Optimised for 50Hz to 20kHz switching frequencies typically found in PV and welding inverters, Infineon announces a new class of low saturation voltage (V CE(sat)) IGBTs. The L5 family is based on the TRENCHSTOP 5 thin wafer technology with an optimised carrier profile further reducing the intrinsically low conduction losses.
MOSFET driver's small package improves efficiency
The first in a new product family, Microchip Technology has introduced two power MOSFET drivers in SOT-23 and 2x2mm DFN packages. The MCP14A005X and MCP14A015X are designed for applications including embedded power conversion, brushed DC motor, unipolar stepper motor and solenoid/relay/valve control in power supply, lighting, automotive and consumer electronics markets.
AC/DC-optimised busbar system offers safety & reliability
Efficient drive systems, idle power loss reductions and the renewable energy sector all require safe, reliable DC solutions which, whilst they cannot replace AC applications across the board, are growing in importance. Addressing this need, Rittal has announced that it is to offer an approved standalone busbar system with standard components, optimised for both AC and DC applications.
Power amplifier IC enhances in-car audio experience
Designed to enhance noise tolerance and negate interference from in-car mobile phone use, a 45W per channel power amplifier IC has been introduced by Toshiba Electronics Europe. The four-channel TCB001HQ provides increased reliability with a newly developed filter circuit and reinforced protection circuits, including thermal overvoltage, output to VCC, output to GND and output to output protection.
PWM controller delivers output currents of 20A
Designed for negative-to-negative or negative-to-positive DC/DC conversion, the LT8709 synchronous PWM controller has been introduced by Linear Technology. The device is unique in solving the problem of regulating a negative voltage with respect to system ground, without the need of complicated level shifting circuitry.
Power supplies are approved for use in medical applications
Suitable for medical, industrial and IT applications, the LPS360-M series of 360W AC/DC power supplies has been released by Artesyn Embedded Technologies. The open frame devices, which have a 76.2x127mm footprint, are available in 12, 15, 24, and 48V adjustable outputs with a 5V standby output at 2A and a 12V fan output at 1A.
